When did life become something we were preparing for?

Betty Mathonsi · October 2026

There is always something coming next.

The next goal. The next season. The version of life that will begin once the work is done, the decision is made, the home is finished, or we finally feel ready.

I know how easy it is to live with your attention slightly ahead of you. To be building something meaningful and still find yourself wondering when you will get to enjoy what you have already built.

Ambition gives us direction. It can open doors, stretch our sense of what is possible and help us create a life that once felt out of reach. But ambition can also keep moving the finish line. If we are not careful, we can spend so much time preparing for the life we want that we are only briefly present for the life we have.

I have been thinking about what it means to be here while becoming. To care about growth without making the present feel like a waiting room. To make plans and pursue them, while still noticing the ordinary things that make a life feel good: a quieter morning, a home that is beginning to feel like yours, a moment of rest without guilt, the feeling of being somewhere new and letting it change your perspective.

These things are not rewards for reaching the next milestone. They are part of the life we are making along the way.

Perhaps intentional living begins with a question: Am I creating a life I want to arrive at, or one I can also be present for now?

I do not think the answer has to be dramatic. It may begin with paying attention to what matters, what no longer fits, and what we want more room for. It may mean allowing success to include wellbeing, beauty, connection and ease—not only achievement.

That is the kind of life Bettriella is interested in: one with room for ambition and softness, meaningful work and moments of pause, becoming and belonging.

We are allowed to look forward to what is next. We are also allowed to be here for this part.
